EURO-FINGERS builds on the successful experience of two multimodal prevention trials: the Finnish Geriatric Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and Disability (FINGER) and MIND-AD, funded by JPND. The FINGER intervention trial has shown that a multimodal lifestyle intervention consisting of dietary guidance, exercise, cognitive training and control of vascular risk factors can help prevent cognitive decline in older people at increased risk of dementia. In MIND-AD, this model was also tested for the first time in patients with early symptomatic (prodromal) Alzheimer's disease.
EURO-FINGERS is using these and other European data to develop tools for precision prevention of dementia and Alzheimer's disease. These tools include methods to accurately measure the risk and prevention of dementia in the elderly. In fact, there is no "one-size-fits-all" solution: to be effective and sustainable, prevention strategies need to be tailored to specific risk groups, determined by clinical and biological characteristics and exposure to environmental risk factors.
The EURO-FINGERS consortium is also developing an innovative experimental model that combines multimodal lifestyle interventions with drugs that can halt or slow the progression of Alzheimer's disease. This includes a tool (EURO-FINGERS online database) that will simply direct citizens/patients interested in research to the most appropriate prevention trials. In addition, the EURO-FINGERS project aims to involve participants at risk of Alzheimer's dementia (or its early stages) in decision-making, integrating their views and preferences into the guidelines on how clinicians should communicate dementia, its risks and prevention options to patients. The project will also develop strategies for shared decision-making to improve the involvement of patients and their carers in the diagnostic process and in the choice of preventive strategies.
The results of EURO-FINGERS are expected to benefit people at risk of Alzheimer's dementia by generating knowledge on effective and sustainable prevention strategies for older people and providing a solid framework for the prevention of Alzheimer's disease in Europe.
